Project Development and Implementation CategoryProject Development and Implementation CategoryInterior Alaska Land Trust—Alaska Land appraisals, preliminary plotting and surveying, and hazardous materials inspections will help the land trust purchase 28 acres of high value habitat adjacent to the Cheena Flats Greenbelt. The property will provide future trail and wildlife corridor connections.
Dugualla Flats Wetlands Funds will help the land trust purchase 39 acres on Dugalla Lake. The diked agricultural land will be managed to enhance habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl. The project complements nearby sites being acquired with Salmon Recovery Funding Board funds.
Kilauea Coastal Preserve Expansion The Kauai Public Land Trust received funds for the appraisal of a 162-acre parcel along the Kilauea River. The parcel will be acquired as part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge expansion.
North Conservation Farm Conservation Easement A 70-acre conservation easement will protect critically important staging and wintering habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds and raptors. Ducks Unlimited will use the funds to initiate the easement process, including appraisal, survey and title search.
North Spit Shorebird Sanctuary Audubon seeks to secure long-term conservation and public access for wildlife viewing and recreation on a 270-acre former industrial settling pond near Coos Bay. Funds will help prepare a report on environmental conditions and conservation potential at the site.
Veteran’s Estuary Stewardship Project CLC will partner with the Veteran’s Conservation Corps to provide restoration training to veterans in a pilot project on the Queets River. Veterans will learn restoration, mapping and monitoring skills as they plan and prepare to eliminate invasive Japanese knotweed
Communications and Outreach CategoryHawaii Wetland Information Network (WIN)Ducks Unlimited—Hawaii WIN will increase data-sharing capabilities among resource professionals and provide a conduit for the public to learn about Hawaii’s wetland ecosystems and waterbird populations.
North Coast Agricultural Outreach Farmland can provide habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds. This project will provide agricultural landowners with tools to make informed decisions on how to protect their property and livelihoods, while preventing conversion to non-agricultural uses.
Palmer Hay Flats Refuge Stewardship through Awareness and Education The refuge includes 40 square miles of prime migratory and nesting bird habitat. APH is planning a natural science and community center. Funds will build organizational capacity and enhance outreach.
Restoring Endangered Hawaiian Duck Populations through Effective Social Marketing Non-native mallards interbreed with endangered native Hawaiian ducks and compete with other native waterbirds. Funds will help Malama Hawaii produce an outreach plan as the basis for a statewide campaign to protect native birds from mallards.
Skagit Valley Agricultural Viability Study Maintaining farmland is important to reaching bird population objectives in many areas within the PCJV. Funds will help WAI begin an assessment of the current condition of agriculture in western Washington and determine factors for sustainability.
Coordination and Planning CategoryAlsea Bay Tidelands Habitat Mapping and Characterization of Restoration NeedsThe Nature Conservancy—Oregon This project will classify, map and examine restoration needs on non-vegetated tidal wetlands within Alsea Bay. The work will benefit waterfowl, shorebirds and fish, and will complement other conservation actions in the watershed.
Mana Plain Wetland Restoration Planning Funds will be used for engineering/hydrological study assessments for restoring 105 acres of wetland and coastal strand habitat in the Mana Plain on Kauai. The area is important for endemic and endangered waterbirds, waterfowl and shorebirds.
Nu’u Wetlands Conservation Planning Funds will be used to begin development of a management plan for a 128-acre acquisition on Maui’s south coast. The Nu’u wetlands are among the healthiest in Hawaii, and support endangered Hawaiian coots, Hawaiian stilts, and many other birds. |
