Conservation Registry adds two layers to mapping tool
Two new map layers—Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) and Congressional Districts—have been integrated into the Registry's Mapping Tool. Together these two map layers add depth to the suite of tools Registry users can utilize for conservation decision making.

Ocean Policy Task Force seeks comments on Interim Framework for Effective Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning
Deadline: February 12, 2010
The Interim Framework includes a number of important provisions that would significantly overhaul the Federal Government’s approach to coastal and marine planning.

USDA Forest Service seeks comments on new planning rule
Deadline: February 16, 2010
The USDA Forest Service announces its intent to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for a new planning rule, and seeks comments on what issues should be considered in the proposed rule and the EIS. Potential principles that could guide development of the rule include an emphasis on restoration, conservation, and improved resilience of ecosystems; watershed health; climate change response; species diversity and wildlife habitat; sustainable National Forest System lands; proactive collaboration; and working across landscapes.


Planning tools and data resources

EPA launches Data Finder
Data Finder is a single place, organized by topic, to find EPA's online data sources. In the near future EPA will use Data Finder to discover raw data and make it accessible via Data.gov. This version of Data Finder provides an initial collection of EPA's data sources. Please share your comments and suggestions.

Data.gov
Data.gov is a federal site that helps people find, download, and use datasets that are generated and held by the Federal Government. Data.gov includes searchable data catalogs providing access to data in three ways: through the "raw" data catalog, the tool catalog and the geodata catalog.


Climate change

Adapting to Climate Change: A Short Course for Land Managers (free—online or DVD)
USDA Forest Service Research and Development has released an interactive short course that presents current scientific knowledge on adapting to climate variability in wildland management. The course is free, and can be viewed online or on DVD. The course features 15 video lectures along with slide presentations, interactive quizzes, literature citations, and links to additional information.

This year's Restoration Institute aims to provide a challenging and intensive program of training in coastal ecosystem restoration. This international forum consists of field trips, skill specific workshops, short courses, presentations, panel discussions, poster papers and a master-class. Two full-credit 5-day courses are also offered before and after the 5-day main event.

Connecting People with Nature Through Birds

Participants will learn to teach others basic bird identification; explore resources including citizen science and bird mist netting programs; discuss current bird conservation issues; and discover the possibilities of inspiring interest in birds through festivals. (This course is usually taught in Virginia.)
