American Bird Conservancy releases new report
Saving Migratory Birds for Future Generations: The Success of the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act
This report was prepared to help the general public, conservation organizations, and elected officials understand the NMBCA’s purpose, goals, and successes, and the need for continuing the program at an increased funding level to improve the conservation of neotropical migratory birds.

Grants

2009 Sea Duck Joint Venture Request for Proposals
Deadline: September 29, 2008
For one-year and multi-year (up to 3 years) projects/studies that advance understanding of sea duck biology and ecology. RFP open to nonprofit organizations, public and private educational organizations, federal, state, local, and tribal governments and organizations, foreign governments, and individual companies. Requires at least a 1:1 match for SDJV funds.

North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) Small Grants Program
New deadline: October 30, 2008
Proposals must represent on-the-ground projects. Grant requests may not exceed $75,000, and funding priority is given to grantees or partners new to the Act’s Grants Program. 1:1 match required. New guidelines are available on the website.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Tribal Wildlife Grants
Deadline: September 2, 2008
Open to federally recognized Tribal governments for fish and wildlife planning, conservation and management actions, laboratory and field research, natural history studies, habitat mapping, field surveys and population monitoring, habitat preservation, conservation easements, public education. Maximum: $200,000 per project.

ESRI Conservation Program and ESRI Conservation/Geography Grants
No grant deadlines
Provides computer technology and training to non-profit organizations working for environment, social justice, indigenous rights or public benefit. Grants are available for: 1.) basic GIS grants consisting of Arcview/ArcEditor, basic extensions, basic books, and training courses, 2.) Society for Conservation GIS conference passes.


Tools and Resources

Species Conservation Plan now available for dunlin
Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network
Summarizes species ecology, status, habitat requirements, threats, and important sites; identifies and prioritizes conservation actions needed to stop or reverse population decline. A number of PCJV sites are important for dunlin.

Ingestion of Spent Lead from Ammunition: Implications for Wildlife and Humans
Proceedings and abstracts from this conference held in Boise, Idaho, 12-15 May 2008 are now available online.

Sea Duck Joint Venture: Summaries of Endorsed Studies

SORA: The Searchable Ornithological Research Archive
This open-access electronic journal archive provides access to an extensive ornithological literature of international scope. Content includes the following titles: The Auk (1884-1999), The Condor (1899-2000), The Journal of Field Ornithology (1930-1999), The North American Bird Bander (1976-2000), Pacific Coast Avifauna (1900-1974), Studies in Avian Biology (1978-1999), and The Wilson Bulletin (1889-1999).

Training

NOAA Coastal Services Center: Coastal Inundation Mapping Training
Course participants will learn about the different types of coastal inundation, ways to map flood areas in the coastal environment, data and methodology limitations, and practical ways to apply this information to support state and local planning efforts. Species Distribution Modeling for Conservation Biologists
American Museum of Natural History Southwestern Research Station, Arizona

Application deadline: July 24

Designed for students, researchers and practitioners of conservation biology. Using a mixture of lectures, hands-on computer lab applications, discussions, and case studies, course participants will learn to: obtain and process data necessary for species distribution modeling; run distribution models using a variety of approaches; validate and interpret model results; apply these techniques to a range of applications.
