West Coast Governors' Agreement on Ocean Health—work plans released
The Governors of California, Oregon, and Washington have released eight issue-specific work plans to improve shared coastal and ocean resources. The eight plans are: Climate Change, Polluted Runoff, Marine Debris, Spartina Eradication, Renewable Ocean Energy, Ocean Awareness and Literacy, Seafloor Mapping, and Sediment Management.


Funding

NRCS Conservation Stewardship Program FY 2010 Ranking Period Two
Deadline: June 11, 2010
CSP is available on Tribal and private agricultural lands and non-industrial private forest land. The Natural Resources Conservation Service will provide financial and technical assistance to eligible producers to conserve and enhance soil, water, air, and related natural resources on their land.

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Pulling Together Initiative
Pre-proposal deadline: June 30, 2010
The Pulling Together Initiative seeks proposals that will help control invasive plant species, mostly through the work of public/private partnerships.

National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program
Deadline: August 1, 2010
Through the RTCA, the National Park Service provides staff who can offer technical assistance for conserving waterways, preserving open space, and developing trails and greenways. Project applicant may be a state or local agency, tribe, non-profit organization, or citizens' group. RTCA does not provide financial assistance to support project implementation.

Arctic Goose Joint Venture Request for Proposals 2010-2011
Deadline: September 10, 2010
Seeking proposals for projects/studies that advance the general scientific community's understanding of goose ecology and management.

Webless Migratory Game Bird Program RFP
Deadline: November 1, 2010
Supports activities that will improve management of 16 species of migratory shore and upland game birds in North America. Proposals should address priority needs posted at http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/NewReportsPublications/Research/WMGBMR/WMGBMR.html

Science-Based Restoration Monitoring of Coastal Habitats
This two-volume manual provides technical assistance, outlines necessary steps, and provides useful tools for the development and implementation of sound scientific monitoring of coastal restoration efforts. May be downloaded by section or in its entirety.


Climate Change

New online tool from NatureServe: Climate Change Vulnerability Index
Apply readily available information about a species to predict whether it will likely suffer a range contraction, population reductions, or both during the coming years. Use the Index as part of a variety of analyses, including assessing the relative risk of species listed in State Wildlife Action Plans. Website includes introductory training session and an overview webinar.


Birds and biodiversity

New shorebird blog and web site invites participation
WorldWaders Posterous is a multi-authored news blog with many contributors from around the world. The blog offers a platform for news about shorebird-related research outcomes, project initiatives, education or events, conservation activities and more. The blog is part of a new website Worldwaders.org, which invites submission of breeding shorebird data. Non-breeding shorebird data can be submitted beginning June 15, 2010.

Environment Canada and USGS Breeding Bird Survey launch online bird ID training program
The Dendroica interactive website helps students, volunteers and professionals improve their skills at identifying birds by sight or by sound, particularly so that they can participate in survey and monitoring programs. The site includes birds from throughout Canada, USA, and Mexico. Participants can contribute new photographs and sound recordings.

USFWS Endangered Species Bulletin—Spring 2010
This edition, produced in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's International Affairs program, focuses on efforts to assist other countries in conserving imperiled wildlife and habitats, with an emphasis on including people as part of the conservation solution.

Species Recovery in the Pacific Region 2009 On-the-Ground Actions (USFWS)
A new report highlights a select group of the more than 140 on-the-ground projects funded in 2009 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Endangered Species Recovery Program in Pacific Region.
