PCJV announces updated Web site and new project portal
Our Web site is now updated for better navigation and access to tools for our partners. Of special note is the new Project Portal, a searchable database of partner projects developed in partnership with the Conservation Registry.

Oregon PCJV Coordinator Bruce Taylor Receives National USDA Conservation Award
Bruce Taylor has been selected as the 2009 national recipient of USDA's Excellence in Conservation Award for his work to support conservation across Oregon. The award is the highest the agency gives to honor those outside the Federal government for their work in conservation. In addition to his position with the Pacific Coast Joint Venture, Bruce works with Defenders of Wildlife.

Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) designates the Columbia River Estuary as a "Site of Regional Importance" for shorebirds

U.S. Bird Conservation Region (BCR) boundary changes are now being considered
Deadline: December 31, 2009
Proponents of changes must complete a detailed information form describing the proposed change.

Researchers seek shorebird data
Needed: summarized, quantitative information, either published or unpublished, that address entire, or at least a significant portion of the range of, populations breeding in North America. Follow the link above for more information.

U.S. NABCI Committee and Association of Joint Venture Management Boards are now accepting nominations for two awards

Public Lands Program Capacity Building Grants
Deadline: December 1, 2009
Grants provide funding to strengthen the organizational effectiveness of community-based nonprofits focused on serving a public lands site in the United States. Ten small grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to community-based Friends Groups.

State Wildlife Grants Competitive Grant Program
Deadline: January 8, 2010
For FY2010, applications must address eligible issues identified in USFWS-approved State Wildlife Action Plans or emerging issues (such as climate change effects on Species of Greatest Conservation Need). Priority will be given to multi-state, cooperative conservation projects that demonstrate measurable performance results and outcomes.

Five Star Restoration Program 2010 Request for Proposals (National Fish and Wildlife Foundation)
Deadline: February 11, 2010
Applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in an online webinar: Dec. 10, 2:00-3:30pm EST

Projects must include on-the-ground wetland, riparian, in stream and/ or coastal habitat restoration; must integrate meaningful education; and involve a diverse set of partners. Grants are $10,000-$40,000. Open to any public or private entity.

Online funding search tool: Conservation Maven Funding Board
Conservation Maven was launched in July 2009 to provide an online hub for conservation professionals, researchers, educators and students. The Web site profiles conservation studies, field news, books and funding opportunities. The funding board can be searched by location and category. Funding opportunity additions are welcome.


Birds and biodiversity

Latest issue of U.S. Fish and Wildlife News focuses on migratory birds

Bird Populations, the online journal of global avian demography and biogeography
Volume 9, published by The Institute for Bird Populations
Includes "The Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) Program 2004, 2005, and 2006 Report," as well as two papers that document the statistical power of MAPS to detect differences and trends in adult survival. Volume 9 also continues the re-vitalization of publication of the Breeding Bird Censuses (BBCs).

Help Project FeederWatch Track Backyard Birds
Bird watchers needed to help scientists discover changes in bird populations
Project FeederWatch begins on November 14 and runs through early April. Anyone can count the numbers and kinds of birds at their feeders and enter their information on the FeederWatch website.


Invasive species

Invasive Plant Inventory and Survey Methods for Land Managers: A Web Seminar Series
Presented by the Center for Invasive Plant Management and partners
The six-week web seminar series is scheduled for January-February, 2010. There is no fee but advanced registration is required.

Help Needed to Collect Knotweed Samples.
University of Idaho researchers are requesting help collecting Japanese knotweed, Bohemian knotweed, Giant knotweed, and Himalayan knotweed specimens. This appeal is part of an effort to gain a stronger understanding of distribution, hybrids, and reproduction strategies of knotweed by utilizing DNA analysis.


Climate change

USFWS Pacific Region Hires Science Leader for Climate Change Initiative
Carol Schuler has been named Assistant Regional Director for Climate Change and Science Application for the Pacific Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Ms. Schuler will begin her new duties in December 2009.

Blue Carbon - The Role of Healthy Oceans in Binding Carbon
This report, produced by three United Nations agencies and leading scientists, notes the importance of marine-living organisms, including seagrasses and saltmarsh plants, in capturing and storing carbon.

EcoAdapt Climate Change Adaptation Survey
EcoAdapt is undertaking a Marine and Coastal Adaptation Survey of climate change adaptation activities and projects in North America. The results will be used to prepare a synthesis report of the state of coastal and marine adaptation in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
